My family has a windows xp desktop and a vista laptop that we want to be able to use the internet simustaniously. For internet service we have sbcyahoo dsl and a speedstream 5100 modem. will the modem be able to handle both computers? the computers will also be in different rooms.

You have to get a router and hook the modem and two computers to it. Depending on your internet speed you should be fine. If you have at least 120 kb/s download you should be ok for doing normal things like look at webpages etc. downloading at the same time may present a problem

No, you will have to buy a router. A router will connect more than one computer. There are Two basic routers one is wired which could connect computers in one room, Then there is wireless which can connect computers in different rooms and laptops can be moved around the house. I suggest wireless, im even connected to the internet right now with more than one computer.
