I'm not a virus writer, or trying to learn how to be, I just can't imagine these people destroy dozens of computers for each virus, and software is software - it needs to be tested.

The information about recovery disks is basically correct: Virus writers either manually or automatically restore their computer to an earlier state by reinstalling the software from scratch or by using a recovery system.
However, the fastest recovery systems will recover a few gigs of data in couple minutes. The local university here loads it's operating system fresh every time you reboot the computer. It is very fast.
Also a key point to note: Since the virus writers know what their virus infections do, they also know the best way to restore and fix the damage. I'm sure a lot of virus writers test their viruses and only fix the parts that the virus broke. This would save them the most time.
PS: If I ever meet a virus writer, I'm going to kick him/her in the nuts and call the cops. That **** is wrong. I work in IT and have to fix the damage that virii, spyware, and other crap does to computers.
