You need to either enable ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) or bridge the connections on the laptop.

The DHCP in the router is replace your private network between the Desktop and the Laptop. When you laptop connects to the wireless router, it gets an IP assigned to it. But your dekstop does not get an IP because it is not talking to the router. Your laptop has become the gateway between the Router's network and the network you created by using the crossover cable.

You'll then have to install some kind of packet switching/routing protocol on your laptop so the packets intended to go to the desktop go though the laptop and are forwarded to the desktop.
Well, you could try setting up web sharing on the laptop; but I don't recommend it. You're far better off getting a router that has wireless and wired connections to get that other machine connected.

Alternatively, you could buy a wireless card for the desktop %26 get it on the network.

PErsonally, I don't trust other people's wireless signals; they could easily steal data from your machines, when you are surfing the web or even buying stuff.

Get a good router, one that has WPA security options, encrypt and set a good password for the router's settings and a different one for the network.
YOu will need to use a router to allow access points for both PC's to your internet connection
